Let’s go fly a kite (online!)

Each May, East Yorkshire coast’s dramatic cliffs play host to some of the world’s largest inflatable kites for the annual Bridlington Kite Festival – but like so much this year, 2020’s event will be very different.

Instead of kites of all descriptions, sizes and colours taking to the air for two days of aerial displays over Sewerby Fields, above the popular seaside resort of Bridlington, this weekend will see the event take flight amidst a different sort of ‘cloud’ – as a virtual festival, giving participants, supporters and families the opportunity to take part and stay safe.

On Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 May, from 10am-5pm, the whole family will be able to experience a weekend of fun through the Bridlington Kite Festival Facebook page, with a range of videos, photos, facts, competitions and interactive activities, including “How to make your own kite at home”.

Hosted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the Northern Kite Group, the Festival – which attracts some of the world’s most internationally renowned flyers performing highly skilled colourful sequences (from rare Oriental Kites, Indian Fighter Kites and some of the world’s largest inflatables) – will hopefully be back in 2021 bigger and better than ever.

People are invited to like and follow @BridlingtonKiteFestival on Facebook in the meantime, and to ‘attend’ the 2020 virtual festival as a taster for when next year’s high-flying event plans its return to the clifftops above Bridlington.
